As we've discussed, my Arkansas (maternal) grandmother was an ardent believer in the mythology of the Lost Cause. She, like so many others, dismissed efforts like McKinley's as purely political. As she put it, it was just "(Yankee) Republicans catering to (Southern Blacks) for votes."
I think our grandmothers were probably cut from a very similar bolt of cloth--it was, as you may recall, exactly what they (and we) were being spoon-fed from an early age. That McKinley kept saying what he said even after the net benefit was negligible--most black voters had been disfranchised-- tells me at least he was sincere. Check back for a future discussion of Warren Harding's equally blasphemous remarks in Alabama in 1921, when only a very few black men were still allowed to vote...
Hope all is well at your end! Without a dog in the NCAA, I am licking my wounds 'til 2024...
I look forward to that discussion. No doubt Harding's action will be a surprise to those who think America was "great" in his era.
I still have a dog in March Madness -- the Maryland women are in the Sweet Sixteen, but face a daunting weekend vs. Notre Dame and, if they win, then mighty South Carolina (currently on a 60-1 streak and ranked No. 1 for two years to date!)
